Boarding School in Mumbai - Incredible India - The Cathedral Vidya School
Nikhath Fatima – Middle School Coordinator
Presenting the Indian Culture to people unfamiliar with its diversity is a daunting task. Where does one begin? The country has so much to offer; from different dialects spoken in remote hamlets to the Silicon Valley in the South there is so much to do, learn, observe, reflect and evaluate. To showcase the vibrant nature of this incredible country a Project called ‘Cultural India’ was explored by the students from Grade 4-8 at The Cathedral-Vidya School – boarding school in Mumbai, India starting in April 2017.
The best way to engage children was to inspire them to create and maintain a scrapbook almost like a beautiful travel brochure that would cover various elements from rulers and their administrations to art forms, cuisines and traditional attire.
So began the scrap book task as students spent 3 hours every Saturday morning working in teams, researching, assessing information for use in their scrap books. This taught them an important skill of selecting relevant information that would arouse the interest of their audience at the same time provide them an insight into the real India.
They used different media print, ICT and technology to make and present the content for their projects. Every two weeks they set up a market place to present their work to different classes, explaining their work, taking feedback from peers and teachers, analyzing, reflecting, evaluating and improving their work for the following week.
This self-discover and self-study of the country where they learn and study was equally beneficial to our International students whose visual perception of the country grew not from travelling and exploring but by reading and presenting.
By November 11, 2017 students are expected to develop their presentation skills and be able to articulate succinctly their work to the parents who will be invite to view the completed scrapbook.
Incredible India is not just what you see in the commercial, but incredible India are these children who can surprise you with their skill to depict the uniqueness of India and take pride in its diversity.
